More interest in alternative crops

Head of crops research, John Spink said the area of field beans and peas sown has almost doubled this year. Part of the research programme, in Oak Park, is focused on alternative crops, he said. The latest research information and advice on beans, oats, oilseed rape and beet is available.

It was also noted at the open day that Irish growers produce some of the highest crop yields in the world. However, given our climate, significant inputs are required. This requires the tailoring of fertiliser inputs to soils and crop needs.

In addition, each year farmers invest €80m in crop protection products for weed, pest and disease control on their farms.
