Open day to address technology and profitability of beef farms
It will focus on the applications of technologies to help beef farmers increase the profitability of their business.
Ireland is the largest exporter of beef in Europe and the fourth largest in the world. The value of beef exports to the economy was estimated at €2.1bn in 2013.
Global demand for meat products is expected to increase further, due to population growth and increases in per capita disposable income, especially in developing countries.
The Food Harvest report has set a target to increase by 20% the value of beef exports by 2020.
This is based on a marketing strategy of Irish beef being environmentally sustainable from a grass-based production system, fully traceable and quality assured at all stages.
A special forum on ‘My Future in Beef’ at the open day will include leading farmers outlining how they are planning their futures as beef producers.
The forum, which is sponsored by FBD Trust, will take place at the end of the open day, which is expected to attract a large crowd.
Key industry experts from Bord Bia, ICBF, AHI, DAFM, and UCD will be present on the day to discuss individual farmer queries.
Bord Bia will be joined by meat industry representatives to outline the market opportunities for Irish beef.
The role of the different cattle breeds in ICBF’s Gene Ireland programme will also be highlighted.
Teagasc advisers will be available to deal with queries on the reformed Common Agricultural Policy and the changes to single farm payments, entitlements, and greening.
