The FBD Young Farmer Springboard to Successful Farming event provided an interactive and novel approach to farming.

The event was organised by Macra na Feirme with the support of FBD and the IFA’s Farm Business Skillnet.

Brian Purcell of The Apprentice, the main facilitator, introduced Ireland and Leinster rugby player Seán O’Brien, who gave a rousing talk on motivation and strategy behind success, both on the rugby pitch and in farming.

He was questioned about his goals, strategy for success, and advice to young farmers.

Bryan Daniels, former winner of the FBD Young Farmer of the Year and a dairy farmer in Kilkenny, said the workshop participants were of the right mindset for planning their future.

Current holder of the title, West Cork dairy farmer John Buckley, urged the young farmers not to limit themselves.

“If you want to achieve, talk to someone who has been successful. Be the best farmer you can be,” he said.

A panel discussion, facilitated by Tim O’Leary, IFA deputy president, involved Rowena Dwyer, IFA chief economist, and Zoe Kavanagh, chief executive of the National Dairy Council.
