Mallow bull stud to boost employment
The facility will create four new jobs when it opens next April. Created with the merger of Dairygold, Kerry Agri and SEL cattle breeding services business in 2007, there are 410 people engaged in providing services for the group, including 47 full-time staff, plus 370 artificial insemination and milk recording technicians on a contract basis.
The original stud was established in 1948, its founders pioneering the development of artificial insemination service for livestock farmers in the area. This involves the selection of superior sires of each breed that are specially chosen for particular commercially important traits.
The facility will give the National Cattle Breeding Centre (NCBC) the additional infrastructure needed to scale up its breeding programme and operate to the highest biosecurity standards, enabling conversion of the potential offered by the genomic technology into real benefits in terms of efficiency and profitability for herd owners.
