Sale of almost 100 acres likely to exceed €750,000

Beautiful area, beautiful farm — but what will be the outcome of this once-in-a-lifetime sale?

Sale of almost 100 acres likely to exceed €750,000

This almost 100-acres farm at Carriganear, Skibbereen, is well known locally, and is renowned for the quality of its land, which is why auctioneer Charlie McCarthy is expecting huge interest.

He’s very familiar with the ground — his father having been close to the previous owner, and the auctioneer would have been around the farm a lot in his youth.

A family farm, it’s now being sold to an expectant autumn market.

Along with a handsome farmhouse and a handy location close to Skibbereen town, this 99-acre holding is seen as a sure fire seller by Mr McCarthy, who’s offering the property by a sealed bids process with a deadline set of October 24.

The list of its attributes should guarantee good interest, but as they say in auctioneering circles: “First, look over the bounds ditch”.

There are any number of good farmers in the immediate vicinity, with the opportunity to grasp a rare parcel of excellent pasture land.

Which is why Charles McCarthy Auctioneers are expecting serious bids. He refuses to give a guide price, but it’s expected that land like this could make anywhere north of €750,000 for the entire, which equates to a very reasonable, €7,500 per acre..

Just two miles from Skibbereen town, with superb road frontage, the farm is in one block of gently undulating pasture land. It comes with a range of buildings, including a stone-built carriage house set in a cobbled courtyard/ farm yard and surrounded, along with the main farmhouse, by a copse of mature trees. The main residence is a fine, vernacular farmhouse with the added benefit of high ceilings, period fireplaces and a southerly aspect. A large two-storey house, it’s set in the centre of the farm and is approached via a long driveway, which continues through the farm.

The position of the property means that selling in lots may be out of the question. Mr McCarthy is disposing of the farm in the entire.
