Ban measures on unenriched cages backed
Two inspectors from the FVO conducted an audit in Ireland during March, and concluded that the department took satisfactory measures to implement the prohibition.
They verified its implementation during a series of on-site inspections which ensured that there are no registered flocks using unenriched cages in Ireland, and that Ireland fulfils its hen welfare obligations.
Across the EU, egg prices have soared due to a major cut in supply caused by the cage prohibition.
In Spain, for example, the egg supply has slumped by 20%.
The price rise is attributed to reduced egg supply in 13 member states that failed to meet the January deadline for prohibition of unenriched cages for laying hens.
