The fire was first discovered by rangers late Friday afternoon west of Lough Leane, and it took the fire service two hours to reach it, and it took until the early hours of Saturday to bring it under control, as it spread across Shehy Mountain and Tomies, which has ancient oak woods.

Kerry County Council has appealed to landowners not to set fires in upland areas. However, last weekend’s blaze was not in a farming region, and the cause is unknown.
