Pig producers remain severely hampered by high feed costs

Export plants offered 142 to 146 cent/kg on a flat rate basis mostly, with the welfare bonus ranging from 2 to 6 cent.

Pork slaughterers offered 146 to 154 cent/kg.

Weaners were at € 30 to €40 for 32kg, sows at 70 to 95c/kg of deadweight.

For the week ending March 26, prices averaged 138 cent in Ireland, 151 cent in the EU-27.

According to David Owens in Bord Bia, pig producers across Europe remain severely hampered by high feed costs, and Irish pig producers remain in a loss making situation, with Teagasc figures for March showing feed costs increased by 27% in the past year, and pig prices didn’t rise enough to cover extra costs.
