Mixed reaction to farm auctions throughout county

IT’S no surprise in a week when the EU and IMF take over the country without firing a shot, that farm bidders have been quiet.

Mixed reaction to farm auctions throughout county

CCM Property Services had a poor auction response for a farm at Killacluig West, Mitchelstown, last Wednesday, and failed to sell the 78-acre holding, but agent Jim O’Brien says they are negotiating with two parties.

Auctioneer Charles McCarthy in Skibbereen had two good auction sales, with more than €10,000 per acre paid for parts of the lands sold.

The first, a 43-acre holding at Gortshanacrone, Skibbereen, was sold for €317,000. It sold in three lots, with the best of the land making €12,000 per acre.

A second auction by the same agent seems to indicate a very positive trend in sales in south-west Cork. A 33-acre holding at Lisheenroe, between Skibbereen and Castletownshend, was knocked down at €325,000, the equivalent of €10,000 per acre, sold in two lots.

Bidding was brisk at both auctions, says McCarthy, who says demand for land is holding up very well, as demonstrated by the two auctions.

The auction of the Killacluig West, Mitchelstown, property was not so positive, although there may be a conclusion to the sale shortly.

Jim O’Brien of CCM says he has two interested parties, with a strong bid on the entire, but nowhere near the €9,000 per acre guide and total envisaged price of €700,000.

However, O’Brien predicts he will sell the property, through private treaty negotiations. This property had been on the market in 2004 at €12,000 per acre, and now looks likely to make less than the €9,000 quoted. In three divisions, the farm is set up ready-to-go as a grazing/dairy farm, and was being offered in up to four lots.
