Neighbours clubbed together to buy farm

THERE was a meitheal of sorts for the sale of a farm in west Cork at Lassanaroe, Skibbereen, which was tied up last week by neighbours acting in concert.

The 54-acre property, which included an old but very attractive farmhouse, was offered in six lots by private treaty through Jim O’Brien of CCM Property Services, and comprised a residential farm with yard and a mix of top-quality and rough grazing. The sale was guide priced at €350,000, but made in excess of €420,000, which the agent interprets as a return of confidence in the farm market.

Located near Skibbereen on the Bantry road, the property has road frontage, and a long driveway to the house and yard.

Community spirit reigned, as three neighbours clubbed together to buy three lots totalling 29 acres, and the five-bedroomed, stone-built farmhouse, with stone outhouses, and three acres. A member of one of the families involved is expected to renovate the farmhouse.
