Farm is ripe for the picking — by local buyers

AT Ballymountain, Innishannon, Co Cork, a farm is ripe for hobby buyers with the requisite ‘qualifications’.

The 12-acre holding of prime arable land is a perfect buy for the hobbyist — but the planning permission attached is only for those who fall within the local criteria set by Cork County Council.

The restrictive rural housing control has caused and cured a lot of problems over the years, but is a handicap for site-sellers, as it decreases the pool of ‘eligible’ buyers.

Despite attempts to loosen sanctions on ‘non-local’ builders, development plans throughout the country have remained stringent. Which is why there is a case pending at European level to test the constitutionality of ‘local-only’ clauses.

However, it will be too late for the sale of this 12-acre field in a salubrious country area near Innishannon. The land is also close to Bandon, which should make it very attractive for local buyers. Currently under wheat, it’s top-quality ground, and comes in one block with excellent road frontage, says Ernest Forde of SWS.
