FOREST owners will have to take the requirements of red squirrels into account, according to an action plan published by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Red squirrel action plan published

The most secure red squirrel populations are in extensive conifer plantations, and these will require sensitive management.

Squirrels show a preference for forest aged over 35 years. Codes of best forestry practice may require planned felling to retain a range of age classes, designation of areas for long-term retention, avoidance of felling certain stands during breeding periods and selective removal of large-seeded broadleaves. These measures are already at the plan stage in Northern Ireland.
