IFA outrage at Glanbia’s 5c/kg pig price cut

IFA has accused Glanbia of reneging on previous commitments to pig suppliers, by leading a price drop of 5c/kg.

Pigs committee Chairman Pat O’Keeffe said Glanbia pay the lowest price, having assured producers in August they would slaughter all the extra pigs from Galtee, and pay a competitive price. ‘IFA will not tolerate producers being taken advantage of in this callous manner,’ he warned.

According to IFA, McCarrens and a small number of other processors followed the Glanbia lead, leaving prices ranging from €1.31 to €1.37 in Glanbia and McCarrens. Elsewhere, prices were unchanged this week, at €1.39 to €1.44/kg. Export plants quoted on a flat rate basis at 140 to 143 cent/kg net in Dawn and 131 to 137 in Glanbia, said IFA. Welfare pigs averaged €1.45 to €1.48/kg.

Pork slaughtering demand was steady this week, with prices unchanged at 131 to 142 cent/kg.

Weaner prices were improved, ranging from €46 to €49 for 32 kg. Sow prices were reported to have fallen by €1 to €3, at €30 to €33/cwt liveweight or €0.87 to €0.95 per kg deadweight.

Slaughterings for the week ending November 27 were 54,618 pigs and 1,566 sows. Irish pig prices averaged €1.36/kg, compared to €1.42/kg in the EU-25.
