Villagers get in line for theme park fun

IT’S only two days to the opening of Snugabheen’s Christmas “Wander Land”. The excitement really is only massive and this year, so is the park.

The organisers felt that the event has expanded over the years, and has finally outgrown Widow Murtagh’s back garden.

Project leader Mac “The Knife” MacCarthy has decided that the Widow should still get to supply the egg sandwiches and crispy cakes.

Every year, the park is built around popular themes. Who can forget the response that the residents of Snugabheen gave to the Treblinka Towers week? Certainly not the lawyers who are still making money from that damages claim, and the Famine Park was another disaster, nobody ate the food and they all left before it got really good.

Last year, it was the Titanic theme. Many people thought that this was in bad taste, given how things ended up for the big boat, but as soon as those 20 spectators drowned on the water slide, things were put in context and everyone began to enjoy themselves.

This year Mac and his team have opted for a Civil War theme.

“The Irish Civil War tends to be forgotten about, these days,” said Mac, at the press conference to launch the event.

“But we are always willing to open old wounds, and rub some salt in, for the sake of entertainment and, of course, the money goes to a good cause.

“Of course, most of the Civil War, with brother fighting brother, passed Snugabheen by, as the town had declared itself an independent republic in 1916. Brother still fought brother, as it was that kind of town, but other than that, those years were peaceful in Snugabheen.

“That said, we are still sensitive to the feelings such a park might re-awaken, so it has all been done in the best possible taste.

“For example, in the Kill A Black And Tan stall, you don’t actually shoot live rounds at some rag-tag British soldiers, that would be crazy. Instead we have half a dozen black and tan pups from the town bitch, Blackie Brown, who breeds terriers.

“They are a pretty mangy bunch, but fast, so it isn’t that easy to shoot them, in their barrel.

“The Michael Collins slide should be a huge draw, it’s very steep. You start at the very top and drop suddenly, a replica of the Long Fellow kicks you on the way down.”
