The investment, which is supported by Enterprise Ireland, was announced yesterday by Agriculture and Food Minister Joe Walsh.

Hilton Foods will process all Tesco’s centrally prepared meat products for its stores in Ireland.

It will also have the opportunity to supply Tesco UK with centrally prepared meat products.

Mr Walsh said Tesco is regarded as one of the leaders in the centrally prepared meat market in Europe.

“It is very important that a plant with the capabilities to deliver the price, quality and service required by a market leader be located in Ireland,” he said.

Mike Feeney, executive director, Enterprise Ireland, said they are delighted to have played a part in securing this project for Ireland and Drogheda.

Around 60 of the jobs are linked to export sales to Northern Ireland and Britain.

Robert Watson, CEO, Hilton Foods said the group’s proven processing systems will be used in the new plant in Drogheda and will contribute to its ability to deliver on its targets with Tesco.

“The availability of a strong workforce was an important factor in the decision to locate in Drogheda and we look forward to working with the local community in the development of this substantial project,” he said.
