Dangers of electricity highlighted
Agri Aware and ESB Networks launched an initiative for children which outlines the role Irish farmers play in facilitating the transfer of electricity around the country and to highlight the potential hazards associated with electricity on the farm and in the community.
Data on the initiative, which outlines electrical hazards and safety tips, has been distributed in the INTO magazine, InTouch, to every primary school in the country. Teachers are encouraged to discuss the safety tips in class and children are invited to enter a colouring competition aimed at increasing their awareness of electrical safety.
Agri Aware chairman, TJ Maher said Irish farmers are playing an important role in providing access to their land, which allows ESB Networks to bring electricity to homes, farms and communities.
“It is crucial children are aware of the electrical hazards associated with the outdoors,” he said.
Chris Fitzgerald, public safety manager in ESB Networks, said they want to eliminate accidents and to get the message out t there is a need at all times to be aware of the dangers of electricity infrastructure.
The competition has prizes for teachers and students. The winning pieces will be shown in September at the National Ploughing Championships at Mogeely, Cork and a number of classes will be invited to spend a day there with Agri Aware. www.agriaware.ie
