Charolais heifer sells for €1,060
Exhibited by James O’Sullivan, Garnish, Beara, the champion Charolais weighed 350kg and was bought by Finnian O’Driscoll of Leap for the top price of the sale.
A good entry of quality stock met with strong demand, with high prices being paid for the tops of the continental breeds, many of the tops making €300 to over €/kg in brisk bidding.
The Charolais bull class was won by a 515kg bull, exhibited by John O’Sullivan of Durrus and sold for €910.
In the Limousin class the top award for a bull went to a 375kg bull exhibited by Donal Murphy of Baltimore and bought by Kelleher Exports, Macroom for €740.
In the class for Limousin heifers the top prize went to a 340kg heifer exhibited by Owen O’Sullivan of Glencreagh, Bantry and bought by Gerard O’Donoghue of Leap for €800.
The quality weanlings continued a firm trade at marts through the week, but the plain weanling is remaining a hard sell and in the absence of a premia payment or a strong export trade, the viability of production for these animals is weak.
There were some minor changes in prices at individual sales compared to the previous week, but quality continental bulls are continuing to make €250-€300 over €/kg with exceptional lots making €350 over and some show stock topping €400 over. The tops of the non continental bulls are making €180-€230 over with exceptionally good bulls making €300 over. The best of the continental heifers continue to sell at €110-€200 over, with a few exceptional prices of €250 over being paid.
