Farm women to guide school project

FARM women are to help bring agriculture into the classroom in a pilot project launched by Agri Aware and the IFA.

The women from the IFA’s Farm Family Committee will act as ambassadors of the Agri Aware educational message on agriculture.

Agri Aware chairman TJ Maher said it was an important educational development.

Agriculture is in a state of change and many people in rural areas no longer have a connection with the industry.

“This project will introduce younger children to the many positive aspects of the farming and food industry that happen in the local area. Crucially, they will be learning from positive people actively involved in the industry,” he said.

President John Dillon said the IFA was delighted to be involved in a project that gives children a positive insight into life on a farm and teaches them where their food comes from.

“This project aims at promoting the many positive aspects of life on a typical family farm to the consumers and practitioners of the future,” he said.

IFA Farm Family Committee chairwoman Mary McGreal said women play a key role in promoting agriculture to the next generation, and as key players in agriculture it is fitting that they are leading this positive educational project.

The training programme devised in consultation with education experts in Airfield Trust and the Professional Development Unit of the INTO was delivered to the participants after the project launch.

Following specialised training, the farm women will select four schools in their local area that would like to receive a visit.

The trained participant will then visit the schools and give an hour-long talk on agriculture.

These farm women have first-hand knowledge of farming and through the specialised training they received will be able to effectively deliver the educational talk to primary schools students.
