IFA move to embrace non-farming members

THE way has been cleared for the Irish Farmers Association to broaden its membership base by enrolling non-farmers and their families as associate members.

The objective is to build closer relationships and a better understanding between farmers and non-farmers.

Limerick IFA had sought further clarification from the Association on the new membership scheme, and this resulted in the November National Council meeting deferring a final decision to launch it.

But Limerick IFA have now given their National Council member, David Thompson, approval to support the introduction of associate membership at the December meeting of the National Council.

The new associate membership, under the IFA Countryside banner, will cost 75 per annum, and will include a range of benefits such as accident and public liability insurance cover, a car insurance discount, and eligibility to benefit from IFA Telecom, a special priced telephone service. However, IFA Countryside members will not have voting rights in IFA elections, and will not be eligible to attend meetings of the IFA.
