More conditions attached to Single Payments

PESTICIDES, hormones, food safety, notification and control of certain animal diseases came within the scope of Single Payment cross-compliance requirements on January 1.

In 2005, requirements were related to the environment, identification and registration of animals, and observance of good agricultural and environmental conditions in farming. Some animal welfare legislation will be added from January 1, 2007.

Agriculture and Food Minister Mary Coughlan has launched a consultation paper and invited submissions on the new 2006 and 2007 cross-compliance requirements.

The paper describes the requirements for farmers and the standards against which Department inspectors will check.

It is available on the www.agriculture.gov.ie website, and submissions can be sent up to Tuesday, February 28, 2006 by e-mail to cross.compliance@agriculture.gov.ie or to Mary Lawlor, Department of Agriculture and Food, Portlaoise, Co Laois.
