Recently, I have seen suggestions in the media for the name of the new Liffey Bridge, and with the time that is in it, I would suggest the Taylor Bridge, honouring our Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor.

I must add my voice to that of Martin Owens (Letters, Aug 10) regarding the achievements of Ireland’s Olympic multi-gold medallist, Michelle Smith de Bruin.

Bank of Ireland’s massive losses of €1.26bn is all the evidence anyone needs of the deepening and grave debt crisis within the Irish banking system, and critically the Irish economy as a whole.

In relation to the recent issue regarding Dáil attire, if Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Luke Ming Flanagan were somehow projected back in time to appear before the wise King Solomon, whereupon he asked them questions about their clothing — such as comfort, use of each item of clothing, energy used in preparing the clothes for wear, cost of their clothing, durability and so on — I would think that the wise King Solomon would conclude that Luke Flanagan is a more practical and sensible fellow than our Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

I was incensed by your correspondent M A Moriarty (Letters, Aug 6) who suggested in his letter that curbing Zionism may bring peace to the Middle East.

THE annual Michael Collins commemoration will come in for particular attention this year because it’s the 90th anniversary, and the Taoiseach will be the orator.

It is good to see that Bishop Diarmuid Martin recognises that his and our society was wrong in how they dealt with illegitimacy and unwanted children.

The latest report on councillors’ wages and expenses is another reason they should be all gotten rid of.

Your editorial (Aug 10) “Fairness must define the budget” had the ring of wishful thinking about it — if the depression has taught us one thing it is that Irish politicians do not do “fairness”.

For the past number of years we have been dragged down to the depths of misery because of the greed, over ambition and mindless speculation of a few people whose debts and expensive lifestyles we are now paying for.
