Katie Taylor bridge a fitting tribute

Recently, I have seen suggestions in the media for the name of the new Liffey Bridge, and with the time that is in it, I would suggest the Taylor Bridge, honouring our Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor.

Katie Taylor bridge a fitting tribute

With the names of a lot of bridges in Dublin coming from political figures of major influence, a fitting tribute to our rich sporting tradition, naming the bridge after Katie, would be more than fitting.

In a world of vain, superficial fame, Katie enriches us with a will and spirit that is something to be truly admired.

We can all look up to her in her dedication, modesty, and sheer excellence, and they are virtues I would like to see acknowledged.

Not only is boxing monopolised by men, but Ireland’s sporting scene is male dominated, but none of them would argue that Katie is the greatest among them, and the name of a strong woman would sit well on a river dominated by bridges honouring mostly men.

I for one would take great pride in explaining to a stranger in 20 years time that the Taylor bridge was named after Ireland’s greatest sports star because she embodied the soul of the country Ireland aspires to be.
