I was delighted to see you print the article by Margaret Hickey (Opinion, August 7). 

I was one of the first people to sign up to the 1999 Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse –but then I found out Protestants were not to be included.

Last week I attended a public meeting in the small rural village of Bilboa which is part of my parish.

The electorate respects the right of this government to canvas in the upcoming election, but no changes will be made to at least 80,000 of our voting preferences at present.

Considering the huge number of people who turned up for Saturday’s protest march against Irish Water in particular, and austerity measures in general, should not this grand little country of ours be re-designated Ire-Land.

I have the highest respect for the Irish Defence Forces. The defence forces are considered by their peers to be highly efficient and professional.

In the light of centuries of misogyny and patriarchy exhibited by the Christian churches, especially but not uniquely the Roman Catholic Church, under the guise of divine command, it is disappointing to read Margaret Hickey’s defence (Irish Examiner, 31 August 31) of banning Fr Tony Flannery from speaking on ‘Church property’.

The ‘reverence for Jimmy Barry-Murphy’ is richly deserved (Irish Examiner, Sport, August 31).
