If you’ve ever wished your dash cam could do more than simply record, the Miofive Mirror 1 might grab your attention. With dual Sony sensors, GPS tracking, and AI driver alerts, it aims to improve everyday driving beyond what standard dash cams offer. After using it for the past month, here’s how it stacked up in real-world use.

Design and build

The Miofive Mirror 1 dash cam is designed to replace your rear-view mirror entirely with a chunky 11.26-inch IPS touchscreen. It feels solid and premium, with a curved anti-glare display and slim bezels that give it a futuristic look.

Behind the glass sits the 4K Sony IMX415 front camera, while the Starvis 2 IMX675 sensor handles the rear setup. Combined, they promise excellent clarity day and night. The Mirror 1 attaches using adjustable straps that fit over your existing mirror, which makes it straightforward but also adds a lot of bulk to the windscreen area.

Installation and setup

Getting started was mostly painless. Everything you need comes in the box, including an external GPS module and a generous 128GB microSD card, so you can record straight away without shopping for extras. The power system connects via a neat 3-in-1 cable that manages GPS, power, and the rear camera together, reducing clutter.

Mounting the rear camera required a little more effort, with cables needing to be routed carefully through the car interior, but it wasn’t overly complex. The Miofive app made setup smooth, with firmware updates and video transfers happening quickly over Wi-Fi. The rear camera installation is the most difficult, and you also need to wire it to the reversing lights.

Image quality

The 4K front and 2K rear cameras deliver crisp detail that makes number plates, signs, and lane markings easy to read, even in low light. At night, the Starvis 2 sensor did a good job controlling glare from headlights, and dynamic range felt strong.

When using split-screen mode to monitor both front and rear simultaneously, the display stayed responsive with no noticeable lag. For reviewing footage, the app lets you zoom into recordings and share clips easily.

Features

The built-in GPS logs routes accurately and adds speed camera alerts tailored for the UK, but does not include Irish roads.

AI driver assistance was hit or miss. Alerts for lane departure and sudden braking worked, but sometimes felt over-sensitive, pinging at moments when I didn’t need them. For everyday driving, though, I turned the AI features off because the constant voice prompts telling me to move when the car ahead pulled away quickly became repetitive.

The ability to switch between front, rear, and split-screen views with a quick swipe made driving more versatile, especially for reducing blind spots. Parking mode and collision detection gave some peace of mind when leaving the car overnight.

Downsides

The biggest drawback for me was weight. The Mirror 1 is noticeably heavier than a standard rear-view mirror, and on my car, it tended to droop every time I hit a bump in the road.

Visibility was another concern. On bright, sunny days, glare on the screen made it difficult to see clearly, and wearing sunglasses only made matters worse. While the display could be switched off to act as a regular mirror, this worked best at night. During dawn and dusk, it was simply too dim to rely on comfortably.

Verdict

The Miofive Mirror 1 dash cam is ambitious, feature-packed, and offers excellent image quality with UK-friendly extras. But its weight and visibility issues hold it back. It’s not for everyone, yet for drivers who want a futuristic all-in-one solution, it has a place.
