Top picks for Horrorthon 2015

Horrorthon is back at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin for 2015, and it's 18 years old this year, which means its finally old enough to actually see most of the titles it shows!
Top picks for Horrorthon 2015

This year, more than 30 films will show across the five day festival, with Irish premieres, special screenings, interviews, short film showcases and the danger of flying DVDs into the audience. That will make sense if you're a veteran.

There are festival passes available for multiple days if you want to set yourself a challenge but if you only have a few hours to spare we've put together a list of some titles that are definitely worth checking out. The Green Inferno and the Surprise film would be worth recommending but they're almost certainly sold out at this point!

Watch Movies with Richard Stanley

A bit of a cheat this one as its two films (plus a short film session) but if you're a fan of the weird stuff Richard Stanley creates then it's not to be missed. The fest is screening Hardware and Dust Devil (the final cut) by the South African director and he'll be along for an interview after each one. They're strange and beguiling entries, with plenty of horror kudos, and well worth a watch.

Turbo Kid - Thursday 22.50

This film has been going down a storm at festival screenings around the world, offering up an homage to all things 80s along with over the top special effects and gore and an appearance by none other than Michael Ironside. It's set in a post apocalyptic future 1997!

Mania - Thursday 23.00

Last year's guest (and lovely lady) Jessica Cameron isn't around this year but her presence will still be felt thanks to the Irish premiere for her new film Mania. It's about a lesbian couple who are forced to go on the run after witnessing a terrifying murder. If it's anything like her last film, things are going to get seriously messed up!

[the trailer is very, very NSFW!]

Goodnight Mommy - Friday 19.10

Sold on the back of one of the creepiest trailers in recent memory, this Austrian horror is about a mother who is in recovery after major facial surgery. Trapped behind a mass of bandages, she is a spectre to her children who start to believe that their mother actually didn't return at all.

Wes Craven Tribute - Friday 23.00

Horror maestro Wes Craven sadly passed away this year and he gets some due credit at the 2015 Horrorthon. And the titles are great offerings indeed, giving audiences the chance to see two of his lesser-seen works on the big screen. The Serpent and the Rainbow is absolutely nuts and The People Under the Stairs is a consistently clever take on the genre.

The Hallow - Saturday 14.45

Director Corin Hardy shot this creepy creature feature in Ireland in 2014, and it looks like it has all the elements you would want from this kind of genre piece. Naturally enough, Michaels McElhatton and Smiley are in it. They're in everything.

The Exorcist III - Sunday 23.00

Did you even know there was an Exorcist III? Well you should because it's really rather excellent. After the (unintentional) horrorshow which was the first sequel, the original novel's author William Peter Blatty wrote and directed this effort based on his own book Legion. It's tight and terrifically well made, with a sense of creeping dread and an incredible central performance by George C Scott.

Honouring Christopher Lee

Another major loss for the film industry this year was cinematic titan Christopher Lee. His prolific career spanned nearly 70 years and Dracula A.D. 1972 is being screened to celebrate his life and achievements. Co-star Caroline Munro will be present for an interview after the film.

The IFI Horrorthon takes place from the 22nd to the 26th of October 2015. Tickets and info here.
