Twitter may ditch 140-character limit
Citing “People familiar” with Twitter’s plans, Recode says that a new product will allow users to post “long-form content to the service.” It’s unclear if this will act as a completely new service or if Twitter will just be tweaked to let users write at length.
Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that co-founder Jack Dorsey is pushing a project that is internally referred to as “140 Plus.” This involves looking at the different ways in which Twitter could expand the 140-character limit. But again, the specifics are unclear.
Recode’s sources say that Twitter has been discussing how the 140-character limit is measured. Should Twitter handles or links be included in the character limit, for example?
In August, Twitter raised the character limit in direct messages from 140 to 10,000 characters. We doubt that the main service will follow suit, but perhaps it will relax its limits or measurements somewhat.
