Twin Peaks shoots in September - will be shot as one long movie!

David Lynch is returning to Twin Peaks to direct the entire new season and he's going to be making it like one massive movie

It still seems incredible that we're getting new episodes of Twin Peaks more than two decades after the show finished back in June 1991. And it's even more uncanny that original creators David Lynch and Mark Frost on board to write it and bring an authentic experience to the new run.

That plan almost went awry early in the year when Lynch and new network Showtime clashed over budget and an issue over the number of episodes. Originally revealed to include nine new eps, we've now heard it could be as many as 18. And there was more great news at the TV Critics Association when Show's David Nevins had a chance to talk about the project.

The best news was total confirmation that Lynch will helm each and every moment of the new limited series, though it came after some negotiations:

"What happened was it became clear it was going to take more than nine episodes which was what we originally planned and budgeted for the length of the series. We had to work out the details of the series and I really wanted David to direct the whole thing. We eventually got through it."

Nevins couldn't confirm how many episodes the run will definitely contain and we suspect that's because Lynch himself isn't sure yet because, typically enough, he isn't assembling the show in anything resembling a conventional fashion. In fact, he's basically just shooting one massive movie, according to Nevin:

"I expect it to be more than nine but it’s open ended. I know what his shooting schedule and I’ll let him cut it into as many episodes as wants to. He’s directing it as one long movie is basically how he’s approaching it."

Together with the looser rules on cable networks regarding running times and censorship, this is going to be a really special treat for fans of the series, allowing Lynch to indulge his every whim when it comes to content and running times.

As to when we're going to see the show, Nevin would love to be able to promise it would appear in 2016 but 2017 seems like a much safer bet.
