Jurassic World now the third highest grossing movie of all time
We were only just writing yesterday about how close Jurassic World was to the box office haul of 2012's The Avengers, and it seems the inevitable has happened. Jurassic World is now the third highest grossing movie of all time, without pesky inflation adjustment that is.
To achieve this, Jurassic World has gobbled down $1.522 billion in global box office dollars, moving just beyond The Avengers at $1.520 billion. The figures are pretty staggering, and come in the wake of Universal's terrible lizard flick breaking several box office records both domestically and worldwide. It's a bit of a phenomenon which was never guaranteed especially so long after the 1993 original.
Jurassic World enters the coveted top three position then but it's not likely to trouble the leaders any time soon. James Cameron pretty much has the top of the list sewn up, with Titanic grabbing $2.187 billion back in 1997 and Avatar earning an utterly insane $2.788 billion in 2009. He really knows how to make a blockbuster, and we don't see him being toppled any time soon, at least until Avatar 2 arrives.
It's absolutely guaranteed that Jurassic World will earn some kind of sequel now, though exactly what shape that would take is pretty confusing. The ending doesn't really leave a lot of avenues open, and any continuation would likely have to move in quite a different direction. Some of the potential plotlines, like the military applications of dinosaurs, sound like they could be a lot of fun but it's difficult to imagine them making this kind of money on screen without the nostalgia factor.
Whatever happens, you're going to be seeing even more dinosaurs on the big screen in the coming years.
