VIDEO: Inside Out director Pete Docter's favourite emotion is Fear
Pixar's latest movie is Inside Out and it delves deep into the mind of an 11 year old girl to show us how the emotions are getting on trying to navigate the minefield of a major event in her life. It's complex and gorgeous and fun and sad - basically all the things you'd want from an animated film by the best people in the business.
We were lucky enough to catch up with the director of the film Pete Docter for a chat about all things Inside Out and couldn't resist asking him which character, and which emotion, he identified with most in the film. The filmmaker - who also helmed Up in 2009 - voices the character of Anger in the mind of Reilly's father, so we started by asking about that.
"I’m Anger in dad’s head. No I don’t really identify with Anger very much. I’m probably closer to Fear [points at the poster] myself!" The films producer Jonas Rivera (who also worked with Docter on Up) piped up with his favourite: "Well my favourite is Joy – and I think I’m an optimist and I’m an appreciator of things. If you ask me my favourite movie I’ll rattle off 20! I’d have a hard time picking. And at the same time I love Joy because she is a nostalgist and I relate to that. She just looks at memories which I do a lot."
It's a pretty neat insight into the minds of these two creative sorts - Docter who has openly talked about his issues with shyness as a child and Rivera who's job as a producer is to be constantly faced with challenges and look for a way to not only get out of them but deliver the best movie possible at the end.
More patterns emerged too, like the way some people felt attracted to Disgust: "The one that surprised me was how many beautiful women say they feel like they are Disgust," says Docter. "I wont even ask and they’ll say ‘that’s totally me!’ I’m not sure exactly why but that’s interesting." And finally the pair noticed that one emotion seemed popular in a specific country: "in Mexico everybody was into Anger. So I don’t know what that says!"
The five emotions go through an incredible journey throughout the story of Inside Out, particularly Joy (played by Amy Poehler) and Sadness (voiced by The Office's Phyllis Smith). And we bet you'll also find yourself drawn to one of these quintet.
