Amy Winehouse documentary breaks Irish box office records

Amy is a feature length documentary about the life and untimely death of singer Amy Winehouse, which released in cinemas in Ireland and the UK at the weekend. And it seems this tragic story has hit a chord with audiences as they flocked to check out the film.

Opening at 133 cinemas across the two islands, Amy managed to score a massive €732,000 opening weekend. That's the highest opening weekend ever for a UK made documentary and the second highest doc opening of all time behind Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 back in 2004.

It's a testament to the enduring appeal of the star, who passed away in 2011 at the age of just 27. And it also shows the hard work put in by the films distributor Altitude, who positioned it as a major release despite a small budget. The film also comes on the back of the success of Senna, also directed by Asif Kapadia and one of the most popular documentaries of the last few years.

Amy also added over €200,000 from the US, bringing it's global box office opening weekend close to €1 million. And it's got plenty more time left at theatres, especially with an expansion due in America. Here's the trailer for the film, which consists of previously unseen footage and interviews with the important people in her life.

Amy is in cinemas across Ireland now.
