A special edition Murphy's stout to celebrate the Cork brewery's 170th anniversary has sold out in many locations, with remaining supplied "limited", according to brewer Heineken Ireland.

The sepcial edition Murphy's 170 Whiskey Cask Stout was launched in September in pubs across Cork to celebrate 170 years of brewing at the Lady’s Well Brewery
in the city. The limited edition brew had a serious kick, with an ABV of 8.4%, compared to 4% for traditional Murphy's Stout.

"Murphy’s 170 Whiskey Cask Stout is still available in a number of outlets in Cork, but supplies are limited, and some locations have already sold out, due to high consumer interest and demand," said a Heineken Ireland spokesperson.

"We created Murphy’s 170 Whiskey Cask Stout as a once-off celebration of 170 years of history, and have seen the hugely positive consumer reaction, however there are no current plans extend its availability.

“We have been delighted with the customer response to our limited-edition Murphy’s 170 Whiskey Cask Stout since we launched it across more than 80 outlets in Cork city and county in September. There has been very significant demand for the special Murphy’s stout."

Murphy’s 170 Whiskey Cask Stout, which is only available in Cork, is aged in whiskey barrels at Midleton Distillery, and has a taste profile with notes of caramel, vanilla, roast coffee, and dark fruit.

James Murphy, who founded the Midleton Distillery in 1825, was the grandfather of James J. Murphy, who, along with his brothers, broke away from the family's distilling interests to purchase the former Cork Foundling Hospital at Lady's Well. They established the Lady's Well Brewery on the site, with brewing commencing in 1856.
