Shannon Airport ends 100ml liquid limit for passenger hand luggage

This follows enhancements to security screening processes at the airport

 Shannon Airport has ended the 100ml restriction on liquids in hand luggage, replaced by a new two litre (2000ml) limit.

Passengers departing from Shannon can now bring liquids, aerosols, and gels in containers up to two litres in their hand luggage. This follows enhancements to security screening processes announced on Monday. The change comes into effect immediately and follow an investment in Shannon Airport's security screening technology and upgraded elements of its 3D C3 scanners, which were first installed at the airport in 2021.  The system eases the passenger experience by removing the need for travellers to take liquids, aerosols, gels, and electronic devices such as laptops out of cabin bags when passing through security.

"This is excellent news for our passengers and enables us to maintain the highest security standards while making the journey through Shannon Airport even easier," said Shannon Airport Police, Fire Service and Security chief officer Pat O'Brien. "Passengers have already enjoyed the convenience of leaving liquids, gels, aerosols, and electronic devices in their hand luggage when passing through security at Shannon. The change announced today takes that convenience to the next level, giving passengers greater flexibility and peace of mind when packing for their trip.

"This latest enhancement further strengthens our commitment to delivering a safe, efficient and hassle-free journey for passengers travelling through Shannon Airport."

The system had already transformed the passenger experience by removing the need for travellers to take liquids, aerosols, gels and electronic devices such as laptops out of their cabin bags when passing through security, reducing touchpoints and helping to make the journey through security more efficient.

 Major upgrades have been taking place this year at the MidWest hub, including a €15m upgrade of the arrivals hall at the terminal building taking place, part of a €40m investment to the airport. 

The immigration and baggage halls are being completely upgraded. The airport authorities said the refurbishments will reduce queues and streamline passenger movement, including a dedicated new entrance for European passengers.

The upgrade will help facilitate the terminal’s transition to electric heat pump technology and new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
