Shannon Airport records busiest day in 17 years amid strong peak season demand

Passenger numbers at Shannon Airport rose by 12% in the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2025, rising to 1.17m people on the back of a growing route network and increased capacity. 

The Midwest airport also recorded its busiest day in 17 years last month, with 11,400 passengers travelling through Shannon on June 28 amid strong peak season demand.

Some 40 services now fly from Shannon to destinations across Europe, the UK and the US, the highest number in 17 years, with new routes in 2026 including Rome, Warsaw, Poznań and Madrid with Ryanair, and Frankfurt with new airline partner Discover Airlines. 

Transatlantic services have also expanded, most notably on Aer Lingus’ Boston route, which has increased from 7 to 10 flights per week from May to July.

This year has also seen increased capacity on a range of popular routes, with additional frequencies to Manchester, Alicante, Barcelona Reus, Lanzarote and Malta, along with the expansion of transatlantic services, Shannon Airport said. 

“Growth at Shannon Airport is being driven by real demand, supported by new routes and more choice for passengers, reflecting the confidence of our airline partners and the strength of the region as a tourism and business destination," said chief executive Ray O'Driscoll.

“Our focus now is on capitalising on this momentum by continuing to grow connectivity and deliver a high-quality experience for passengers travelling through Shannon.”

The airport said its results follow a strong performance in 2025, which saw 2.3m passengers travel through it.

Shannon Airport said its transatlantic network continues to form an important part of its overall connectivity, with direct services to New York, Newark, Boston and Chicago.

These routes are operated by Aer Lingus, United Airlines,) and Delta Air Lines, offering over 420,000 seats in 2026.

The Shannon Airport Group continues to invest in infrastructure and sustainability, with a multi-million-euro capital programme underway across the airport and the Shannon Airport Business Park.

Beyond aviation, the Group's Business Park is home to over 300 companies and more than 10,000 employees.
