Concerns about impact of Brexit on Ireland's energy supply

Concerns are being raised about the impact a Brexit would have on our access to energy.

Ireland currently receives a supply of the fuel through Scotland as well as from the Corrib gas field.

However if the UK votes to leave the European Union, it is unclear whether or not that service would be maintained.

Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly said we are too dependent on the UK for our energy supplies.

"We have the Corrib at the moment, but that will only last about 50 years," he said.

"We are dependent on one interconnector from Scotland into Ireland. If the UK votes to leave the EU, we are cut off.

"If there was a crisis would the UK continue to pass the gas onto us? If they were within the EU, they would be compelled to."
