€4.5bn spent last December on debit cards

Almost €4.5bn was spent on debit cards here last December.

Figures released by the Central Bank show that nearly 2.8 billion was Point of Sale activity.

1.7 billion was accounted for by ATM transactions.

In the same month, credit card Point of Sale expenditure was around 984 million euro.

By the end of February, debit card ecommerce stood at over €719m, a rise of 45% over the year while credit cards increased by just 7%, showing that debit cards are increasing in popularity over credit cards.
