Union threatens apprentice strike

A union representing apprentices working in over 700 companies nationwide is threatening strike action.

The TEEU is demanding the removal of student service charges paid by apprentices.

The union says apprentices are often paid below the minimum wage and are not eligible for grants, but still have to pay fees of up to €2,750.

It says industrial action will take place across the manufacturing sector on November 2, unless the Government removes the charges.
