Coveney confirms negotiations for €500m farm-support package
Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney has confirmed that negotiations are underway for a €500m support package for EU farmers.
The package was proposed by Ireland's Commissioner Phil Hogan in Brussels today.
It comes as violent protests break out in Brussels, involving thousands of farmers angry at the price being paid for their milk.
Police used water cannons to try to disperse the demonstrations, which came ahead of a meeting of EU agriculture ministers who are accused of not doing enough to end low milk prices.
