Sean Dunne back in US court in bid to have bankruptcy application withdrawn

Businessman Sean Dunne is back in court in the US today as he continues his bid to have his bankruptcy application withdrawn.

Dunne had filed for bankruptcy in the States last year after court orders directed him to repay more than €185m to Nama.

However, he wants to have that application dismissed.

The Irish Times Washington Correspondent Simon Carswell explains why Dunne is seeking to take back the application.

"He's saying he cannot afford to defend the objection that Nama has taken against his discharge from bankruptcy in the US and also (that) even if he is successful in having his debts discharged, there's nothing to stop Nama challenging that discharge in the Irish courts.

"He's effectively saying there's no point running two bankruptcy cases because he can't afford it (and that) it's best to go with the Irish one."
