Workers look for reinstatement of JLC system

A number of workers from sectors including retail, hotels and contract cleaning are at the Labour Court today calling for a reinstatement of the Joint Labour Committee (JLC) system.

Before the system was ruled unconstitutional in 2011, the JLC system set protection for wage and training standards.

The Coalition to Protect The Lowest Paid said the court had to take the opportunity to enhance the protection given to workers.

Campaigner Gráinne O'Toole said reinstating the JLCs would be a positive step on the jobs front.

"It's a strong message that we need to send out - that we care about workers, we care about standards and this is a good place to do business," she said.
