The Polish government is attempting to put together a consortium of semi-state financial institutions to bid for AIB's stake in the Polish bank Zachodni.
Reports in Polish newspapers suggest the government is mulling a bid for the bank to bring it under Polish control rather than see it bought out by another European bank.
