Staff at Musgrave Retail Partners in Cork have been reassured that their jobs are not in jeopardy.

Cork workers were spared the axe yesterday, which fell on the company’s Galway depot.

Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland (MRPI) announced the closure of the Galway depot with the loss of 70 full-time jobs.

The move is part of a reorganisation of company structures that will result in the transfer of distribution activity from its Galway depot to its Cork and Kilcock sites.

The company employs 914 people in Cork and 1,550 nationwide.

A spokeswoman for Musgrave said: “The decision does not affect Cork whatsoever. The jobs there are not in jeopardy. Most of the activity from Galway will transfer to Kilcock.”

Musgrave said the decision to close the Galway operation was due to the extremely difficult market.

A statement from the company said: “MRPI and its retail partners in SuperValu and Centra are operating in an extremely difficult market, which contracted by 7% in 2009. Competition is intense, with consumer demand for reduced prices increasing and shopping in Northern Ireland now a regular feature of the sector.”
