Credit card providers urged to provide limit alert

The Consumers' Association of Ireland is calling on credit card providers to alert customers when they are going over their credit-card limit to help people avoid over-limit charges.

Chief executive of the association Dermott Jewell said most of the providers are US-based and will in any case have to implement the alert system for their US customers.

US legislation coming into force next year requires credit card providers to alert customers that their purchase will put them over their limit.
