Irish banks gave out 20% fewer mortgages in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2007.

The latest data from the Irish Banking Federation and Pricewaterhouse Coopers shows that almost 30,000 new mortgages worth €6.3bn were issued during January, February and March.
