Bill 'may have serious implications' for smaller outlets

The Irish Petrol Retailers Association has said the draft Intoxicating Liquor Bill may have serious implications for the smaller retail outlets that do not have the luxury of spare floor space to separate trading areas.

The association welcomed proposals to curb underage drinking in principle and agreed that underage drinking is a serious problem.

David Blevings of the IPRA said: "IPRA retailers have responsible management policies in place, teach staff how to identify fake ID’s and are actively encouraged to display information on the current law relating to alcohol sales in their stores.

"The IPRA is currently reviewing alcohol sales guidelines for retailers and will seek an early meeting with the justice minister to discuss the impact of the proposed legislation on smaller stores." he added.
