Industry group calls for phasing out of cheques

The body that represents the electronic payments industry in Ireland is calling for cheques to be phased out over the coming years.

The Irish Payments Services Organisation says the use of the common cheque is costing the economy up to €1.4bn a year.

It claims Ireland is one of the most inefficient countries in Europe when it comes to embracing electronic payment methods.
