The FTSE 100 Index lost ground today as profits of £10.3bn (€13.5bn) from Royal Bank of Scotland failed to cheer the financial sector.

The UK’s second biggest bank slipped into negative territory as early enthusiasm over its 2007 figures faded, and it was joined in the red by the likes of Barclays and Halifax Bank of Scotland.
