Island farmers seek increased EU subsidies
Farmers on Ireland's islands are calling for increased subsidies to compensate for the extra costs they face.
The Irish Islands Federation wants the EU Single Farm Payment to be increased by 50% for farmers working on the 33 islands around the Irish coast.
The organisation says farming on the islands is helping to sustain their 3,000-strong population, but high costs are putting local farmers at a disadvantage compared to their counterparts on the mainland.
