Online auction site eBay.ie has announced the appointment of John McElligott as the new managing director.

Online auction site eBay.ie has announced the appointment of John McElligott as the new managing director.

eBay.ie, the dedicated Irish site launched in June 2005, together with PayPal, eBay's online payment system, employ 1,200 staff in Ireland.

"eBay.ie is wholly committed to providing its Irish customers with the best service which is tailored to local customer and business needs," said McElligott.

"In my new role, my main focus will be to develop, and enhance the experience for, the Irish eBay community. I'm delighted to take on this challenging role at a very exciting time for eBay.ie."

Originally from Tralee, McElligott joined eBay in January of this year as head of customer development. Prior to joining eBay, McElligott was a senior manager at global management consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, focusing on strategy for financial services and retail companies.

He has also worked as a business analyst for banking group UBS Ltd.

Currently on eBay, an item is sold every minute by an Irish seller and in the period from July to September this year, three items were bought by an Irish buyer every minute.
