New call centre contracts in Belfast are expected to create 300 extra jobs this autumn.

Belfast company Gem has attracted four client businesses, including Channel Four and online entertainment company Play.com, to anchor the enterprise at two locations in the city.

Recruitment is beginning now and all posts should be filled by November.

A spokeswoman for Gem said: “The other clients which we have attracted are an online dating agency and a travel company.

“We are based on Lanyon Place and we are also building a new centre at Lesley Exchange near Central train station.”

Play.com will be basing its customer care facility in the North.

The jobs boost follows the establishment of call centres near Bangor and Enniskillen.

The operations can handle calls from across the UK.
