Mobile phone operators hit out at cinema blocking plan
The blocking of mobile phones in cinemas and theatres would be inappropriate and impractical, it was claimed today.
The Irish Cellular Industry Association (ICIA), which represents Irish mobile operators, said putting interceptors in venues could have a severe impact on public safety.
It stressed that the inappropriate use of mobiles is a behavioural issue that can and should be addressed through education and communication.
“It is the ICIA’s view that there is already high compliance with mobile etiquette,” said director Tommy McCabe.
“While appreciating the concerns of those parties that are affected by the inappropriate use of mobile phones, it is our view that the use of jammers or interceptors would be a drastic response, disproportionate to the issues identified.
“The use of interceptors would generate significantly greater concerns for users, venues and operators – particularly where public safety is concerned.”
The Ward Anderson group, which owns the landmark Savoy and Screen cinemas in Dublin and controls around half of the cinema market in Ireland, said last week it has tried to come to an agreement with mobile-phone companies to install the technology needed to block all calls but emergency numbers.
ComReg, the communications regulator, said mobile-phone interceptors can only be used legally with the permission of mobile phone networks, but added they were not obliged to install the equipment.
The ICIA represents Vodafone, O2, Meteor Mobile Communications and 3 Ireland, and the mobile handset manufacturer Nokia.
Mr McCabe said implementing interceptors would involve significant network redesign which could not guarantee phone users in surrounding areas would not be affected.
“On a practical level, there is also the silent facility on mobile phones that allows, for example, parents of children some peace of mind by ensuring that they can remain in contact with baby-sitters while at the cinema – without disturbing those around them,” Mr McCabe added.
